What is EOTAS?

Education Other than at School (EOT AS) Pupils can be out of school for a variety of health reasons, or following permanent exclusion from school.

There is a range of provision for such children and young people, which includes Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) offering a mix of academic and vocational courses of study, individual home tuition, work experience, vocational training at a college of further education, and community or voluntary projects.

Currently there are 94 full time places available in PRUs for pupils in all key stages.

The key strategy of the PRUs is to support and prepare pupils for reintegration back into mainstream schools, in particular for pupils in key stages 1-3. PRUs are now managed on behalf of the Authority by New Horizons Centre in the east and Cuckmere House School in the west.

Home tuition is primarily offered to pupils who are too ill to attend school and an emphasis is placed on continuing links with the school to facilitate the pupil's return.

Consideration is being given to the benefits of e-leaming as a supplement to educational programmes for vulnerable pupils and it is planned to commence a pilot within this financial year. A number of children are voluntarily educated at home by their parents and a programme of home visits is undertaken to ensure that their education remains appropriate to their needs.

A specialised joint Education and Social Services Education Team provides targeted support for looked after children with a view to ensuring they can access school, attend regularly and achieve as much as possible.

Education provision for young offenders in the Lansdowne secure unit in Hailsham is provided by the PRU facilities managed by Cuckmere House School.
